At Youth for Sustainable Development (YSD), safeguarding is a fundamental responsibility across our programmes, operations, partnerships and engagement with communities. We are committed to ensuring that children, young people and vulnerable adults are protected from harm, discrimination, neglect, abuse and exploitation, while also ensuring that our employees, volunteers and other representatives are able to work in safe and supportive environments.
Our Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy establishes the standards and responsibilities that guide how everyone associated with YSD should engage with children, young people and vulnerable adults. It provides a common framework for identifying and responding to safeguarding concerns, promoting good practice and strengthening accountability throughout the organization. The policy applies to YSD employees, volunteers, consultants, partners, vendors and other representatives working with or on behalf of the organization.
YSD maintains clear safeguarding responsibilities and reporting procedures. Staff and volunteers are expected to understand their responsibilities, follow the organization’s safeguarding policy and Code of Conduct, and raise concerns through the appropriate channels. Designated Safeguarding Officers are responsible for handling safeguarding concerns appropriately, ensuring that reporting procedures are followed and making referrals to relevant authorities where necessary.
We also recognize that safeguarding requires continuous learning and organizational commitment. YSD provides guidance, support and training to employees and volunteers on recognizing signs of abuse, responding appropriately to disclosures, raising concerns about the welfare of children and understanding where to seek advice and support. Managers and organizational leadership have defined responsibilities for ensuring that safeguarding standards are understood, implemented and consistently maintained.
Protecting personal and sensitive information is also an important part of our safeguarding approach. Information relating to safeguarding concerns is handled confidentially and shared strictly on a need-to-know basis, ensuring that information is only accessed or disclosed when necessary for official duties or appropriate safeguarding action.
Through this policy and our wider safeguarding standards, YSD is committed to creating an environment where people are treated with dignity and respect, concerns can be raised safely, and appropriate action can be taken when risks or safeguarding concerns arise. Safeguarding is not simply a policy requirement for YSD; it is an essential part of our responsibility to the young people, communities, staff, volunteers and partners with whom we work.
