At Youth for Sustainable Development (YSD) – Machakos Chapter, we believe in the power of active citizenship to drive positive change within our communities. Our work in active citizenship is rooted in engaging young people and marginalised groups in sustainable development, environmental conservation, and social accountability.
OBJECTIVES
Our Active Citizenship work aims to:
- Promote sustainable practices that safeguard the environment and community well-being.
- Foster youth-led initiatives that enhance social accountability and civic engagement.
- Equip young people with skills and knowledge for economic empowerment and sustainable livelihoods.
- Strengthen community resilience through environmental conservation and awareness programmes.
- Advocate for policies and actions that support climate change mitigation and adaptation.
OUR ACTIVE CITIZENSHIP INITIATIVES
Through collaboration with local and international partners, we empower youth and communities to take ownership of their environment and socio-economic well-being. Our initiatives include:
- Climate Change Awareness & Environmental Conservation: Educating communities about climate change, its effects, and sustainable solutions, including tree planting and clean-up initiatives.
- Sustainable Livelihoods: Providing training in income-generating activities such as soap making and value addition to raw materials, promoting economic independence and environmental responsibility.
- Community Well-Being & Mental Health Awareness: Promoting mental health through education on the benefits of herbal and tree-based medicinal solutions, while fostering holistic community wellness.
- Youth Leadership & Social Accountability: Engaging youth in forums, dialogues, and training sessions to enhance civic participation and encourage accountability among local authorities and service providers.
OUR IMPACT SO FAR
Through our Active Citizenship Day (ACD) initiatives, we have successfully:
Conducted climate change awareness sessions, tree-planting exercises, to promote environmental conservation.
Organised clean-up drives to improve public spaces and promote community responsibility.
Trained community members in sustainable income-generating activities, such as soap making and value addition to raw materials.
Organised mental health awareness workshops, focusing on the use of herbal and tree-based medicinal solutions.
Engaged youth in leadership forums and dialogues to promote civic participation and social accountability.
By equipping young people with the skills, knowledge, and opportunities to become active citizens, YSD is fostering a more inclusive and sustainable future in Machakos County and beyond.
